Master of Science (M.Sc.) HEC Montréal - International Business.
Welcome to the complementary and unofficial website website of the M.Sc. International Business by Pr. Thierry Warin. The official website is here. The purpose of this site is to answer your most frequently asked questions and to facilitate your experience within the HEC Montreal Master’s in International Business.
Here you will find information on courses offered in upcoming semesters, recommended courses for new students, how to choose between a thesis or supervised project pathway, etc..
Please refer to the summary of health instructions for the start of the school year issued by HEC Montréal.
You will consider the first 18 months of your master’s degree to schedule your courses and then do your supervised project or thesis.
Courses are not offered every semester. It is therefore very important from the moment you arrive to build your agenda.
To do this, let’s define the concepts: a course is a title, a content, an expertise specific to each professor and a methodology.
Indeed, a course is both knowledge (= field) and skills (= methodology). When you choose your courses, don’t only consider the title of the course! Behind this title can be many other things: the professor is an economist, so the approach will be economic and it may not be what you were looking for!
Therefore, choose a course by following an optimization process also using the table below:
which courses are offered each semester?
What is the expertise of the professor? This will tell you what disciplinary approach will be chosen.
What is the content of the course? Look at the syllabus for this.
What is the methodological approach for this course? Do you prefer a qualitative, quantitative or data science approach? This is important because this is about developing skills beyond knowledge. Think about what you want to do after the Msc.
To help you with these dimensions, here is a table that groups all the dimensions in one place, so click now!
Frequently asked questions:
Can I take a course in a language other than my own? Yes
Can I take a course that is in another “profile” in the course table on the official website? Yes. The profiles are there as a guide. Think about what you want to do after the MSc.
Can I select a course from the MBA program? Nope, it is a different program.

Workshop | Endnote |
What I am writing here will vary across professors, their personal responsibilities, life styles, etc. Remember that your professors are no longer students, they are employees ;-). We work all day long and very often we also teach in the evenings. We try to grade during the week, but sometimes it goes over our week-ends. We review papers, we write articles, etc. Sometimes, you will have your exam on Monday, and the temptation to ask just one question during the previous week-end will be high. Well, it creates a lot of issues. First of all, a lot of students will have only one question during that week-end, which means your professor will spend her/his week-end as a hotline. It may also create unfair situations and rumors. Like you, when a professor receives an email outstide of the normal work hours, s.he feels the urge to respond anyway, and it is rarely one email when you teach 2 or 3 courses, with lots of students. All in all, I would encourage you to follow an email etiquette: write emails to your professors during normal working hours Monday to Friday 8 AM- 6 PM. If an exam is getting close, then send your emails before the week-end. Be proactive. Thank you!
